Telegram Messenger, launched last year in September is a fairly new App that is giving WhatsApp a run for it's money! Though not yet a hit in Uganda, possibly because it's not widely known (remember how long it took for us to notice whatsapp, Twitter, and facebook? ), it's a total hit in may parts of Europeand America. The battle for instant messaging has already become a game of thrones. Some have an advantage over others, but Whatsapp has been ruling for sometime now until it was acquired by Facebook, a move which saw it lose over 5million users in a day!
Telegram Messenger rushed in that overcrowded battleground with some interesting features, aiming to be positioned as a real alternative to what's already on the market;sincerely one can comfortably say it's close likeness to Whatsapp is one of the reasons for it's shooting fame.
Like Whatsapp, Telegram is free with no ads, has an option to attach and send photos/videos and has a keen interface that bares alot of resemblance to whatsapp.
However, it gets more interesting. Telegram gives you the ability to send messages and photos with a
self-destruct timer, within the 'secret chat'. Within a secret chat, documents, videos, locations
and searched images can all be sharedmeaning nobody but the sender and
recipient can read/forward the messages - not even the Telegram staff. Secret chat
messages can't be forwarded to others outside of the conversation, and no
trace is left on their servers. So confident is Telegram in the security of their messages, they're offering $200,000 worth of Bitcoin to the first hacker to break into its encrypted protcol until March 1. It's also cloud-based, meaning messages can be sent and accessed from multiple devices, including desktops.
You can download the app from the Google Play store or many other sources.
Who knows, maybe this is a good plan B in light of the rumors online about threats to shut down whatsapp and facebook because of the recently signed anti gay bill. see http://www.the-ugandan.blogspot.com/2014/02/uganda-antigaybill-rumours-emerge.html
In other news, in a bid to remain relevant and ahead of the game, Whatsapp announced that they are soon launching Free Voice Calls for their users. Watch this space.
